…and the wet/cold/rainy weather’s back. Have you cranked the central heating back up again this morning?

Barbeques in the rain, a sure fire sign that summer has arrived.

Barbeques in the rain, a sure fire sign that summer has arrived.

If your home (or office, church, hospital, library, chapel, surgery, yurt) has original period windows, you will undoubtably be feeling the cold and draughts again…unless you have Clearview secondary glazing. And properties with old or basic secondary glazing systems, with the recent warm weather spell, may already have gone through the pane-full (sorry) task of removing the panels and storing them for next winter. Or, you left the secondary glazing panels place, because you couldn’t face the hassle of removing them.

Ta-dah! Not the case with Clearview‘s secondary glazing systems, they can stay in all year
round to keep the cold and draughts out during cold snaps and simply opened for ventilation or cleaning whenever required. They can even be fitted with fly screens, so you can enjoy the summer breeze and keep those pesky pests out!

When the sun DOES shine, open up your secondary glazing, let the fresh air in!

Summer! Open your windows, let the fresh air in (and keep the bugs at bay).

It looks like summer has arrived. So scrub down the BBQ, get your shorts on, plant your bedding plants and open your windows to let the fresh air into your home.

Clearview secondary glazing flyscreens keep flies at bay.

Summer’s here. Bugs, wasps, flies and lots of flying nasties.

But what about those nasty wasps and flies? Landing on your freshly prepared salad and guzzling on that summer fruit pudding? Fear not, Clearview have a rather natty solution, so you can enjoy fresh air and fresh fruit salad.

Enjoy full ventilation in summer with Clearview's secure fly screens.

One big benefit of our secondary glazing is easy access to windows for ventilation and cleaning, without the need to lift out or unfasten awkward mechanisms. On a hot summer’s day you can simply open the windows and let the fresh air in. And now, you can just switch one of the glazing panels (it only takes a few seconds) for one of our fly screens, so you get continued airflow, but the bugs stay outside. These fly screens offer big assistance with hygiene in hospitals, hotels, schools, restaurants and the home.

Clearview fly screens are simple to open, simple to close.

Like all the best ideas, it’s simple and effective. And throughout June, July and August 2013, Clearview will supply a FREE fly screen with all secondary glazing orders* where there’s an appropriate window application, or the cash equivalent if a fly screen can’t be accommodated.

Condensation can be a real pane.

ImageCondensation can be a real pane. For years John S had been mopping it up every morning from the bay window of his 5 bedroomed home.

Clearview speedily fitted secondary glazing to the bay window, ending John’s drippy problem once and for all. John and his wife Barbara have lived in their home for 50 years, and the house was originally built in 1905. It’s located in a conservation area, where local councillors take a dim view of window alterations that change the exterior look of a house.

ImageThe single glazed bay in the front lounge looked good, but made the room chilly and dripped rivers of condensation. Says John: “We love the bay’s original glass, and didn’t want to change it, but there was so much condensation that every morning I had to use a bucket and cloth to clean up the water.”

“Then we read about Clearview’s secondary glazing, and called them.”

Clearview specialise in quickly making homes much warmer by stopping cold draughts blowing in through windows, and heat rushing out – dramatically increasing fuel bills.

Clearview’s secondary glazing provides an almost invisible barrier between you and cold (and hot) weather, as well as significantly reducing outside noise.

Says John: “The lounge is much warmer since the secondary glazing was fitted, and the condensation has stopped. We have also noticed a reduction in noise from the main road outside. We really like the fact that the secondary glazing does not detract from the look of the bay, inside or out. We don’t notice it.”

Clearview’s secondary glazing frames come in a huge range of colours, including white, mahagony and light oak. The glazing is easy to fit, open and clean. It is more cost-effective than renewing old, single glazed wooden units. Replacing old window frames isn’t a good idea, as the timber in Victorian and Edwardian windows is usually far superior to that used today.

Clearview installers can do the fitting for you if you live in their fitting area, or they can supply the glazing for you to fit yourself.

English Heritage have published research that Clearview’s methods can match the performance of double glazing.

Clearview assist with refurbishment of £4.6m Glasgow landmark hotel

Clearview fitted secondary glazing at Park Inn in Glasgow.

Park Inn is the former Pearl Assurance Buildings in the heart of Glasgow.

Work is nearing completion on Glasgow’s new city hotel, the 91-bedroom Park Inn by Radisson. The project is being delivered by main contractor Russells Construction, on behalf of developer Hotel Land and Development. Clearview Secondary Glazing were awarded the contract to fit secondary glazing to the renovated windows in the Grade B-listed building. They started the project in Autumn 2012, and finished at the end of January 2013, although the project as a whole is targeted for completion in Spring 2013.

Park Inn is the former Pearl Assurance Buildings on the corner of West George Street in the heart of Glasgow. Empty for decades, the stunning six-storey building has benefited from careful management of interior installations and preservation of the original features, previously hidden for years. Originally commissioned to secondary glaze five of the building’s six floors, the developer was so impressed with the effectiveness of the secondary glazing that they commissioned Clearview to secondary glaze the final floor, which they achieved in record time. Andrew Saunby, MD of Clearview, says of the project: “The Park Inn is a landmark period building and in terms of Clearview’s product range, it was a fairly standard installation, and one in which we were able to utilise our specialist heritage expertise. The range of unique designs and sizes of the original windows resulted in us fitting secondary glazing units from across our entire range”.

Clearview worked within a critical time frame for this installation, which utilised their specialist heritage expertise.

Clearview worked within a critical time frame for this installation, which utilised their specialist heritage expertise.

“One notable aspect of the project is the critical time frame which Clearview were required to work within. As soon as a floor was available we conducted a survey, then our fitting team returned two weeks later to fit glazing to that floor. Whilst there, they also surveyed the next floor, and so on until completion”.

In the case of Park Inn, the joint requirements of the secondary glazing units were thermal and acoustic insulation, as the building is situated on a bustling, city thoroughfare. The specification stated windows need only be accessible by cleaning and maintenance staff, so Clearview fitted window locks throughout (almost 200 windows in total). Ventilation wasn’t a requirement because the building is air conditioned throughout. Throughout the installation, the hotel’s lifts weren’t operational: so each of the 200 secondary glazing units had to be transported upstairs by the fitting team.

The developer commissioned Clearview to secondary glaze a 6th floor.

Andrew Saunby concludes: “Clearview have become experienced at handling major commercial renovation schemes, and these are often based in busy, urban locations. Our expertise in the historic buildings sector means we appreciate the restrictions often involved with landmark, period and listed buildings”.

Heat easily escapes through single glazed windows, allowing in cold and draughts and dramatically increasing your heating bills. This is a problem for homeowners with period property, who haven’t installed double glazing because they would like to preserve the character of their original windows. But an almost invisible barrier to heat loss and draughts is available – Clear View’s secondary glazing. It is a much cheaper alternative to replacing the entire window, and has the added benefit of dramatically reducing street noise.

Because secondary glazing cannot be seen from the outside, and is hardly noticeable from indoors too, means it’s possible to preserve the unique look of old windows, which is especially important in conservation areas.

Clear View secondary glazing customers, Jillian and Jim.

Jillian and Jim had 3 windows secondary glazed by Clear View.

All these factors were taken into consideration by Jillian Creasey and her husband Jim Cowley when they were considering insulation and heating efficiency measures for their 4 bedroom terraced home in a leafy suburb on the west of Sheffield. Jillian and Jim had already taken steps to insulate their home and make savings on energy bills; they had insulated their loft and had solar panels fitted to the roof. Clear View fitted 3 windows with secondary glazing in less than a day. Jillian (a local Green Party councillor) says: “One of the rooms that we had secondary glazing fitted in is used as an office, and should be much warmer this winter. We were very happy with the work Clear View did”.

Collaboration Street.

Three homes on the same street in a Sheffield suburb have had secondary glazing fitted by Clear View, including the bay featured here (and 13 other windows) at one home.

Ask your neighbours. Which tradesmen do they recommend? It’s the sensible thing to do when considering home renovations. David Coldron took the advice of people who live nearby when he wanted to fit secondary glazing at his five-bedroomed, semi-detached home in Millhouses. The property dates from 1887, and David was keen to preserve its period look. He knew that windows of two houses on his street had been insulated, and their owners told him the work was done by Clear View, whose services they recommended.

Says David: “My window frames were typical wooden-single-glazed ones. They suited the property, and were still in good condition, but let in draughts. The bay window was a particular problem because it caused the living room to be cold in winter. Secondary glazing seemed to be the solution, and when my neighbours spoke highly of Clear View, I called them in.”

Clear View fitted secondary glazing to the bay and 13 other windows in David’s house. The work was finished in a day and a half, and afterwards there was no need for re-decorating or cleaning up. David chose three different styles of secondary glazing for his various windows – taking advantage of Clear View’s extensive range, which suit frames that are horizontal or vertical-sliding, hinged, or sliding-sash.

“I was very impressed with Clear View,” says David. “They’re weren’t pushy. They looked at what needed doing, gave advice, and a price. All the sash windows are fully working, and there is access to the beading should maintenance be needed in the future.”

The city of Sheffield is blessed with many stunning period homes, especially in conservation areas like Ranmoor and Nether Edge on the western edge of the city.  The windows in these Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes are often draughty – and city council planning rules usually insist on like-for-like replacements. It’s no surprise then, that the owners of these properties often imagine that they must put up with energy-inefficient windows. This is where we can help. Our glazing panels are hardly visible, inside or out, and they are available in a vast range of frame colours: white, mahogany, light oak…and many more.

There are 4 fundamental styles: sliding-sash, hinged, horizontal or vertical-sliding. Our secondary glazing is easy to open and and easy to clean (and much cheaper than double-glazing). It is also easy to fit, because the original windows are not taken out, so there is no need for re-decoration. You can fit secondary glazing to all of your windows, or even just to one. It is more cost-effective than replacing single-glazed wooden frames. Fitting secondary glazing is so energy efficient that you will soon notice the savings you are making on domestic fuel bills.

Clear View fit secondary glazing at Endcliffe Methodist Church on the outskirts of Sheffield

Clear View secondary glazed 13 of Endcliffe Methodist Church's windows.

Clear View secondary glazed 13 of Endcliffe Methodist Church’s windows.

In the beginning… there were only draughty, single-glazed windows in the lower hall of Endcliffe Methodist Church. For years, visitors had prayed for warmth. Now those prayers have been answered, thanks to Clear View fitting secondary glazing to 13 windows. The church – built in 1904 – allows various organisations to use its lower hall for activities such as yoga classes, and playgroups. But during previous winters the hall’s temperature could be chilling because too much heat escaped through windows. This problem was of concern to John Bailey, who has been property manager at the church for 20 years – but then he heard about Clear View Secondary Glazing. He says: “I was told how Clear View had fitted secondary glazing to a church in 20 miles away, so I went to have a look at what had been done. The people who ran the church spoke very highly of Clear View and the products they had fitted.“

As a result, Endcliffe Methodist Church successfully applied to Sheffield City Council’s Climate Change Fund for a grant to insulate the lower hall using secondary glazing. The work involved Clear View working on windows in high and tricky positions, but the project was completed within two days. The insulating panels are virtually invisible. Says John: “We are very grateful to Sheffield City Council for funding the project, and to Clear View. There was no mess or fuss. The hall is now much warmer, and we look forward to lower fuel bills.”

Clear View, have fitted 1000s of secondary glazing frames, and their service is becoming increasingly popular as word spreads that they can often insulate properties within a day. Clear View installation work is done so carefully that there is no need for redecorating.

Clear View’s secondary glazing is so well designed and installed that it is invisible from the outside, and barely noticable inside. Frames come in a range of colours, including white, mahogany, and light oak. There are various styles: sliding- sash, hinged, horizontal, or vertical-sliding. The glazing is easy to fit, open, and clean, and much cheaper than double-glazing. It is also more cost-effective than renewing old, single-glazed wooden units. Replacement of frames is not the best idea, as the timber used in Victorian/Edwardian windows is usually far superior to that of today. In many cases the wood has lasted well over 100 years, and with a little attention will last another century. Clear View can also supply the materials for you to fit their secondary glazing yourself, or his expert installers will do the work.
